Pirates salvage finale against Cards on walk-off
Xavier Paul was running. No matter what.
The Pittsburgh Pirate reserve watched the ball of the bat of teammate Chase d’Arnaud slice into the outfield with one out in the 10th inning against the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday and decided he was taking off regardless of where the it landed.
“It was extra inning ballgame,” Paul said. “I felt like it was deep enough....

Indiana drops cursive for keyboards
The Hoosier State has sent cursive writing to follow the path of its buddy calligraphy into history, joining a number of other states that have dropped the writing form.
Legislators decided time in the classroom would be better spent learning the keyboarding skills necessary to compete in the computer age than perfect penmanship skills only used in thank you notes to Grandma.

Run Log: 070811
Runkeeper activity.
85 F, 93 Real Feel®, 55% humidity. Moderately tough run. Seemed much more humid than 55%. Felt awkward for much of the first half, though periodic self-checks were all good. Focused on Lakeside and the 17:00 mark, and made it through. Was pretty wiped out at the end of the run.
Big Thing(s): Kept visualing turning the corner from Lakeside onto Nevada. That got me down...

Run Log: 070611
Runkeeper activity.
Started off well, but quit at roughly the 17:00 mark. No physical reason, just mental. And, no real explanation.
Big Thing(s): 1) Humidity in the low 90% range. 2) 17:00. Not sure what that’s about, but it’s the first mental wall. If I can get to 20:00, I’m good to go. Making it past 17:00 has been hard.
Little Thing(s): 1) Some tightness in the left thigh....

Runkeeper activity.
82F, 92 Real Feel®. A good solid run. Didn’t struggle during any part of the run. Kept the positive mental conversation going, checking and confirming that everything felt good. Didn’t consider walking at any point.
Big Thing(s): First: added 2:00 to the runs from last week. Two weeks ago, I was struggling to make 22:00. Went to 24:00 today. Could be hydration,...

A Changing Of The Guard →
Wednesday night, you can’t do anything but give the Hero to Chris Carpenter. A complete game, resting a bullpen that was short members due to release, recent use, or nagging injury. One run over those nine, with five strikeouts and an impressive piece of pitching in the fifth, when he had bases loaded with nobody out and was able to emerge unscathed.

Yet there’s no denying that the same issue that kept the others off of MLB mounds in 2010 - health - persists. Colon could return from the disabled list this weekend; the Mariners placed Bedard on the DL today; McCarthy has been on Oakland’s disabled list for more than a month.

St. Louis Cardinals release reliever Ryan Franklin →
Franklin, an All-Star closer in 2009 and a bit less dominant in 2010, has been terrible this season. His latest blowup Tuesday against the Baltimore Orioles was the final straw for the Redbirds. Franklin got one out, allowed three hits, one home run and two runs, bumping his ERA to 8.46 this season. He’s also allowed nine home runs in 27 2/3 innings.

Run Log: 062911
Runkeeper tracking.
This was another good run, though the weather left a bit to be desired. 81 F, 85 RF - it was humid.
I seldom really warm up, and I tend to start slow. That was the case today. I tried to stay steady throughout the run. Didn’t hit any real walls, but did consider walking again on Lakeside. The first half of Nevada was tough, too, but I knew I was within 5 minutes of...

Freese, Punto come off DL for Cards →
Reinforcements will arrive at 6:05 p.m. today when the slumping St. Louis Cardinals begin a six-game road trip with a three-game series in Baltimore. The Cardinals on Monday recalled third baseman David Freese (broken left hand) and utility infielder Nick Punto (strained right elbow) from their minor-league rehabilitation assignments. They will be in uniform tonight when Kyle Lohse (7-4, 2.91 ERA)...

A-Rod Money
Today, SI’s Jon Heyman tweets that the Cardinal slugger is thought to be looking for the type of contract that Alex Rodriguez received to stay in New York. A-Rod inked a 10-year, $275MM contract back in December of 2007 at the age of 32, so it’s no surprise to see Pujols, 31 in January, making similar demands.
